Mat Manual companion guide to "Stop the Turn: Defending the Half Nelson." Print it. The article attacks the turn's three checkpoints in order: wing down against depth, the wrist and the look-away against the angle, posture against the pressure, with the elbow roll waiting on a committed drive. This book prints the defence as it happens: the wing-down posture check for base, the defence sequence as a drill card, the elbow roll taught on its trigger, a three-errors fault table coaches can call from the edge of the mat, and a log that scores the stop and the sequel in separate columns.

BEFORE ANYTHING: THE LAW OF THIS DEFENCE ☐ Nothing reaches back. Not for his hand, not for his arm, not ever. A reach back ends the set and the sequence is rebuilt from the wing. ☐ The head is up in base and travels to the far shoulder when the half arrives. It never hangs, and it never stares into the half. ☐ The turn is answered by angle, not by force. Pushing back into his chest with your back and neck is the one answer this book forbids. ☐ The top partner drives turns at drilling force in every defence drill. A defence trained against a cranking partner is a defence trained against an injury. The tap or any call stops a rep instantly. ☐ A stopped turn is scored together with what followed it. The log's two columns (Part 22) are both filled, every row.
Part 1: The Defence at a Glance
| His checkpoint | Your counter | The moment |
|---|---|---|
| Depth | Wing down, hard, on the shot | As his arm travels |
| Angle | Look away: chin to your far shoulder | As his hand lands |
| Pressure | Posture: base, free hand posted, his wrist taken | As the drive starts |
| A committed drive | The elbow roll | On the drive's commitment, not before |
