Mat Manual companion guide to "The Half Nelson: Turning Someone Who Does Not Want to Turn." Print it. The article teaches the turn and its three checkpoints: depth, angle, pressure. This book builds the turn: breakdown-to-half chains for both sides, the checkpoints as a pre-drive checklist called out loud, the power half at drilling force under its safety line, decision drills for what the turn feeds, and a resistance ladder so the turn is learned against a partner who is allowed to beat it.

BEFORE ANYTHING: THE SAFETY LINE OF THIS BOOK ☐ The half nelson is a turn, never a crank. Force that presses a partner's head toward his shoulder past the turn's need is out of this book and out of the room. ☐ In every drill, the bottom partner's tap or the word "flat" stops the turn instantly, at any point, with no finish taken. ☐ The power half (Part 11) is drilled to the edge of the turn only, never cranked through a resisting neck, and only after Parts 4 to 10 pass at standard. ☐ A bottom partner with a neck history does not take power-half reps. He takes plain-half defence reps instead, and the log records the substitution without comment. ☐ Turns are walked through before they are drilled, and drilled before they are live. Speed is the last variable added, and the first removed when a new partner arrives.
Part 1: The Turn at a Glance
| Element | The standard |
|---|---|
| The arm | Threaded under the near armpit, forearm deep, hand on the back of his head, palm down |
| The free hand | Owns his far wrist: pinned to the mat or drawn across his body |
| Your chest | Heavy on his near shoulder blade before any drive begins |
| The drive | Diagonal, toward his far shoulder, roughly forty-five degrees, never straight ahead |
| Your hips | Low, behind yours, walking around his body as he turns |
| The finish | Turn completed and settled for two seconds before anything is claimed |
