Mat Manual companion guide to "How to Not Get Submitted in Your First Year." Print it. The article teaches where danger lives. This book trains the early game: a safety covenant for both roles, posture standards inside every guard, elbow and neck habits as drills, a recognition curriculum for the major submission families with first-second tells and early answers, tap discipline trained deliberately, the white-belt rules map, and trackers that log every submission received by family and cause until defense becomes habit.

SAFETY, BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE — THE TWO-ROLE COVENANT ☐ Defender: tap early and clearly, by hand, voice, or foot stomp, at lost defense and strong pressure — before pain becomes damage. Tapping is a scored skill in this book, never a failure. ☐ Applier: apply every submission slowly enough for a tap to arrive, catch and release in all beginner work, and release instantly on any signal of any kind. ☐ Never crank a submission. Speed and force are never added to a lock or choke in this system; control before submission governs every rep. ☐ Beginners do not apply heel hooks, neck cranks, knee bars, toe holds, or slams, and partners do not test beginners with them (rules map, Part 17). Recognition and safe exits only. ☐ Any joint pain, neck complaint, or dizziness ends the rep and is told to the coach the same session. Hiding an injury is the one true failure in this book.
Part 1: Defense Scoring — How This Book Measures Survival
Escapes from finished submissions are emergencies. This book scores the game played before emergencies.
| Event | Score |
|---|---|
| Full round with posture never broken inside a guard (coach or partner judged) | 2 |
| Submission family named correctly in its first second (Part 8 call drills) | 1 per correct call |
| Early answer executed before the submission's second stage forms | 2 |
| Clean tap delivered at correct timing from a formed submission | 1 (a good rep, recorded proudly) |
| Late tap (after pain) or tap avoided by enduring | 0, and the cause is logged (Part 19) |
| Submission received: family and cause coded in the log | Always; an uncoded tap is a wasted lesson |
| Applier fault: fast application, late release, banned technique | Session fault; coach review before further rounds |
