Mat Manual companion guide to "The Tornado and the 540: Learning the Demo Kicks Without Eating the Mat." Print it. The article separates the chain into its skills. This book stages them: six ladder rungs with pass standards from ground turns to the travelling tornado, a parallel ladder for the 540 and its kicking-leg landing, fault-fix tables keyed to the falls you will actually take, and the mat, spotter, and stop rules that keep a months-long project injury-free.
Name: ______________________________ Gym: ______________________________ Coach: ______________________________ Current rung: ______________ Dominant side first: ☐ Left ☐ Right
BEFORE ANYTHING: THE RULES OF THE LADDER ☐ Rungs are gates, not suggestions. A student trains the rung they have passed into, and attempts nothing above it, however easy the rung below has become. ☐ Crash mats are the floor of airborne work until the landing statistics in Part 13 say otherwise. Hard-floor tornadoes are earned, never assumed. ☐ A spotter is present for all airborne rungs until a coach signs the student clear of one, in Part 27. ☐ The stop rule ends airborne work for the session: dizziness, any ankle complaint however slight, or two backward falls. It is not negotiated, by the student or by enthusiasm. ☐ These kicks are trained fresh. Airborne work is scheduled early in sessions, never as a finale, and never as a punishment set.
Part 1: The Ladder on One Page
| Rung | The work | The gate |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ground turns: the step across and full pivots on the floor | 20 clean turns, no hop, no stumble, both sides |
| 2 | Jumping turns, no kick: step, knee drive, jump, full rotation, two-foot landing | 10 landings in a row, upright, on a marked spot |
| 3 | Chamber holds: jumping turns finishing with the kicking leg chambered and held | Chamber held through the landing, leg never drifting out |
| 4 | The kick onto a pad at low height, from a standstill start | 8 of 10 kicks on the pad with a controlled set-down |
| 5 | The travelling tornado, onto crash mats | Consistent landings at full height across two sessions |
| 6 | The 540 ladder (Part 18): the rungs rebuilt around the kicking-leg landing | Each 540 rung passed separately |
