SAFETY, BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE ☐ Jumping work stops for pain in the knee or ankle on landing, for any landing that twists a joint, and for any student whose landing quality has collapsed with fatigue. The set ends; the technique can wait. ☐ Surfaces are checked before every jumping session: a forgiving, even floor with no seams, edges, or debris in the landing zone, and ceiling and surroundings clear for the full height of the work. ☐ Height is gated by landings (the height rule): ten clean landings at the current stage before the paddle rises one hand-width, and the paddle drops the moment landings degrade in a session. No exceptions are argued at the end of a session. ☐ Students with a history of knee or ankle injury, or pain that appears during landing work and stays, follow the instructor's and, where relevant, a clinician's plan before volume or height rises. ☐ Jump kicks are thrown at held paddles, shields, and bags in this book's drills. Live use follows your school's rules with full protective equipment.
Part 1: The Specification
Every drill in this book is measured against this page. Your instructor's standard governs where it differs; the structure does not change.
| Element | The specification |
|---|---|
| Takeoff (two-foot) | Both feet leave together off a quick knee dip and arm swing; body rises straight, hips square |
| Takeoff (scissor) | Feet switch in the air; rear leg drives up as the front leg tucks |
| Takeoff (step) | A step gathers under the body, then takeoff; travel comes from the step, height from the jump |
| Chamber | Knee folds during the rise and arrives ready at the top |
| Fire | Leg extends as the body reaches the top; extension and peak arrive together |
| Retraction | Leg folds back before the descent begins |
| Landing | Support pattern down first, knees soft, weight over the feet, stance and guard restored |
| Failed rep rule | A clean strike followed by a stumble is a failed rep, recorded as one |
Terminology note. Jump kicks carry the prefix ttwieo ("jumping") before the kick's name in Korean: ttwieo ap chagi is the jump front kick, ttwieo dollyo chagi the jump roundhouse kick. Schools name the scissor entry differently; this book names entries by what the feet do, so the names survive translation between gyms.
