Mat Manual companion guide to "Testing for First Dan: The Longest Day in Taekwondo." Print it. The article describes the day. This system prepares you for yours: a written specification of your own school's test, a component-by-component readiness audit that weights the old forms first, a 12-week build planner with full mock tests, a breaking practice plan with holder assignments, and the test-day checklist that gets the right boards, documents, and candidate to the right hall.

BEFORE ANYTHING: THE RULES OF THIS SYSTEM ☐ Your school's written specification of the test outranks every general statement in this book. Part 2 exists to capture it. Where the two differ, prepare to the specification and note the difference. ☐ The audit in Parts 4 to 10 is scored honestly or not at all. A candidate who inflates the audit meets the truth in public, on the day, at full price. ☐ Breaking practice follows the safety rules in Part 16 without exception: trained holders, correct materials, and no stack attempted untrained because the test is near. ☐ Mock tests are run at full duration. A shortened mock is a rehearsal of a shorter test that does not exist.
Part 1: The Test on One Page
| Component | What it samples | Prepared in |
|---|---|---|
| Poomsae: all eight Taegeuk plus Koryo | Memory, accuracy, composure across the whole forms syllabus | Part 4, Part 21 |
| Basics | Raw technique on command, at volume | Part 5 |
| Breaking: power and technique | Commitment, accuracy, nerve under fatigue | Parts 6, 16, 17 |
| Sparring, often against fresh rotating partners | Distance, courage, control, organisation under fatigue | Parts 7, 18 |
| Self-defence | Applied technique against honest grips | Part 8 |
| Theory, written and oral | Terminology, meanings, history, rules | Parts 9, 19 |
| Fitness | The engine under three to four hours | Parts 10, 20 |
| The day itself | Arriving with the right documents, uniform, and boards | Parts 23, 24, 25 |
The stack is the test. Candidates fail the stack more often than they fail any row of it, which is why this book's centre of gravity is not any single component but the audit that rates them all and the planner that runs them together, tired, in order, before the real day does.
