SAFETY, BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE ☐ All exchange work in this book runs at agreed speed and contact, in full protective equipment, under your school's and your event's rules. Head contact divisions and age restrictions govern where they apply, and they override this book. ☐ Checks are trained at graded force. No student absorbs a full-power kick on a checking leg until the absorption stages have been passed at the lower grades, with the instructor's call. ☐ Attacks below the waist, leg catches, and sweeps are trained only where the school's ruleset allows them, and are named as ruleset-specific wherever they appear. ☐ A checking leg that is hurt, a knee or ankle that takes a bad collision, ends the exchange work for the day and follows the school's assessment route. ☐ Electronic protectors and sensors are equipment, not referees: disputed registrations in training are settled by the holder's or coach's call, recorded honestly in the log.
Part 1: The Specification
Every drill in this book is measured against this page. Your instructor's standard governs where it differs; the structure does not change.
| Element | The specification |
|---|---|
| Stance | Weight balanced or shaded slightly back; front foot light; lead knee soft and ready to lift without a preliminary shift |
| The lift | Knee rises first; the leg folds briefly and high so the foot's path to the target is short |
| Cut kick | Short, sharp extension, sole and edge to the trunk protector, snap back on the same path |
| Front-leg roundhouse | From the lift, hips roll just enough; extension around into the protector's side panel; retract before the answer |
| The check | Front knee lifted early into the kick's lane, shin presented, weight back enough to absorb |
| The counter | Fires from the check's position without the leg going home first |
| Range | Front-leg range: the protector reachable with a short extension; managed constantly by the feet |
| Scoring honesty | This system trains touches that register. Extra force spent pushing the opponent away is scored as an error in this book's logs |
Terminology and rules note. The cut kick is taught under several names across schools; this book names it by its action. WT electronic scoring registers trunk touches of sufficient force on the protector and head kicks at higher value; exact values and sensor thresholds are set by the current WT rules and the event's equipment, and your coach's current rulebook governs where it differs from any general statement here.
