Mat Manual companion guide to "The Heian Kata Are a Self-Defense Syllabus." Print it. The article reads the five Heian as one application syllabus: the wrist grab, the push, the lapel hand, and the swing at the head, answered in five installments. This workbook works that reading: application cards for each Heian, a resistance ladder that no card is signed off below, partner safety standards for grabs and locks printed on the cards, a drill-two-not-ten planner, and test-day demonstration prep. It assumes you know what bunkai is; the first bunkai workbook in this library covers the beginner layer.

BEFORE ANYTHING: SAFETY IS PASS/FAIL IN THIS WORKBOOK ☐ Every lock, crank, or control in these cards is applied by position, never by force, and released the instant your partner taps, says the stop word, or goes still and silent. A release that waits is a failed rep, whatever the application did. ☐ Tap early is the attacker's job as much as the defender's. If a joint is being loaded and you are not sure how much room is left, tap. Pride is not a joint-protection strategy. ☐ Grabs in this book are real grabs at the stated clothing or wrist, taken at practice speed first. Nobody's fingers, wrist, or neck is the place to discover a reading is wrong at full force. ☐ Throat contact, eye contact, and strikes to a partner's head appear in no card in this workbook. Applications that end in strikes finish on pads, on a held target, or pulled at the agreed distance. ☐ Your instructor's readings govern in your dojo. Where a card's reading differs from your school's, train your school's version and note it on the card. The standards, ladder, and safety rules in this book still apply to it.
