Mat Manual companion guide to "What the Form Is Practising: Poomsae Application." Print it and bring it to class, because that is where this book does its work. It covers Taegeuk Il Jang and Taegeuk Yi Jang. It does not teach applications to practise alone. What it gives you is the Kukkiwon-standard reading for each movement group, a class drill for each reading, and a journal for your instructor's version and for what the partner work teaches you.

BEFORE ANYTHING: THE RULES THIS BOOK DOES NOT BEND ☐ Every drill in this book is instructor-led class work. Do not rehearse applications at home, and never on family or friends. ☐ Strikes are pulled. Every punch and kick stops short of the target or touches the uniform lightly, as your instructor directs. A strike that lands hard is a failed rep. ☐ Grabs are holds, not twists. A grab takes hold and holds. It never twists, cranks, or drags, and any grip pulling a partner off balance outside the drill's design stops the drill. ☐ Release on the tap or the word. Any tap and any spoken stop ends the rep at once. Release first, talk after. ☐ The attacker controls the drill. The attack is known in advance, fed at the speed the instructor sets, and held out for the response to meet. Surprise is not part of any drill here. ☐ Stop for pain. A joint that hurts, a partner who goes quiet: either stops the drill. Tell your instructor before the next rep. ☐ Both partners attack and both defend in every drill. Swap roles after each set.
Part 1: How This Workbook Works
Every reading in this book is labelled a reading, and that word matters more than any other word in it. A reading is an interpretation taught for a poomsae movement: what the movement can do against a partner, built from the movement's own mechanics. It is not a recovered secret, and it is not the only answer the movement can hold. The readings printed here are the Kukkiwon-standard applications, taught as the standard. Where your school teaches a different reading, that reading is a variant, and it goes in the journal beside the standard, because your instructor's version is the one your grading tests, and your instructor wins in your own book. Every time.
Each form section runs in the same order, so you always know where you are:
| Element | What it does |
|---|---|
| Reading cards | The form in movement groups, with the standard reading for each group and its principle |
| Class drills | One drill per reading, for instructor-led work: attack, response, distance, control rules, reps |
| Reading journal | Blank tables for your instructor's reading, the principle, what you felt, and your questions |
How to fill the journal: one row per movement group, in pencil, in class or right after. Write the reading the way you would explain it to a student one belt below you. If you cannot write it plainly, you do not own it yet. This book is the taekwondo companion to the library's First Bunkai Workbook for karate, the same method, in this art's own forms.
