Mat Manual companion guide to "Pretty Kata, Low Score: What Kata Judges Actually Deduct For." Print it. This book gives you the panel's eyes as worksheets: a self-scoring sheet mirroring the technical and athletic criteria, a deduction-spotting checklist keyed to the error sizes judges actually charge, tempo maps for the Heian set and Tekki Shodan, an occurrence counter that exposes the small fault you repeat twenty times a kata, and a selection worksheet that matches your kata to the panel you will face. Film first. Every sheet in this book assumes a camera.

BEFORE ANYTHING: THE FILMING RULES ☐ Film from the judge's chair position: front corner, seated height. The dojo's favourite angle flatters; the panel's angle scores. ☐ Score the film at least a day after performing it. Same-day scoring defends; next-day scoring teaches. ☐ One kata per scoring session. Scoring five films in an hour produces opinions, not deductions. ☐ Your federation's version of the kata is the reference. Note any movement where your line differs from another before you call it an error.
Part 1: The Two Halves — Scoring Reference
| Half | What it contains | Common weight in the model |
|---|---|---|
| Technical performance | Stances, techniques, transitions, breathing, the kata performed recognizably as itself | The larger share |
| Athletic performance | Strength, speed, balance, rhythm and tempo contrast | The modifying share |
| Under both | Fighting realism: targets, gaze, intent, the kata as a fight | Charged inside both halves |
