BEFORE ANYTHING: SCOPE AND SAFETY ☐ Breath training here is ordinary training breathing: natural inhales, firm exhales, no prolonged breath holds, no hyperventilation games, no breathing contests. Any drill that makes you dizzy stops, and you sit down. Dizziness is never trained through. ☐ Students with asthma, heart conditions, or any condition affecting breathing follow their clinician's guidance first and tell the instructor. An inhaler a student uses stays at the edge of the mat, known to the instructor, always. ☐ Kiai volume is built at practice volume first. A sore throat after training means the shout came from the throat, not the abdomen (Part 9), and the next session works at half volume until the mechanics are right. ☐ Children train the pattern with sound effects and games at low volume. No child is ever asked to shout at maximum in drills.
Part 1: The Pattern, On One Page
| Phase | Breath | Body | Cue word |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prepare: chamber, step, draw back, hikite (pulling hand) loads | Inhale, nose where pace allows | Shoulders down, jaw loose, hands working only | "Fill" |
| Travel: technique moves | Exhale, controlled, through the mouth | Tension rising along the technique's line only | "Out" |
| Land: kime (focus) | Exhale finishes, short and sharp | Whole body hard for one instant, abdomen braced | The technique itself, or the kiai where placed |
| Reset: rechamber, guard, step out | Inhale resumes | Tension released on purpose, shoulders drop | "Drop" |
Self-test before any drill work: perform 10 oi zuki (lunge punch) slowly, saying the four cue words aloud at their phases. If you cannot say "drop" because there is no air or no drop happening, the drill progression starts at Part 4, stage 1, whatever your grade.
