Mat Manual companion guide to "The Flinch: Why You Close Your Eyes, and How Training Fixes It." Print it, work the stages in order, and let the checkboxes decide when you advance. A stage is passed by what an observer can see, never by how brave you felt.
Safety First
- This progression is class work. Every stage runs under an instructor's supervision, with partners briefed on the script before the first attack. None of it is home practice.
- Contact to the head is controlled and light at every stage, with or without headgear. Most stages work to the body, to a guard, or to a pad. No stage in this book teaches anyone to accept a hard head shot, and no drill here is a toughness test.
- The attacker delivers the agreed attack at the agreed speed to the agreed target. Nothing else. An attacker who improvises ends the drill and the session is restarted at a lower stage.
- Protective equipment is worn as the stage table requires, fitted and checked before the round starts.
- Any student can stop any drill at any time, for any reason, by raising a hand and saying stop. The drill stops. No explanation is owed and no penalty attaches. This rule is what makes the rest of the book possible.
- Dizziness, headache, blurred vision, or any symptom after a contact means training ends for that student that day, and the instructor follows the school's head injury procedure. There is no finishing the round.
- Pain, panic, or distress that does not settle when the dose drops is a stop signal for the day, not a stage failure. The ladder will be there next class.
