SAFETY, BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE ☐ Knees to the head in drilling are pulled, placed, or held on pads only, as the coach directs for the group. Full-power head knees are never thrown at a partner's unprotected head in practice. ☐ Age and division rules govern head knees in competition. Youth and novice divisions in many jurisdictions bar knees to the head entirely. The coach confirms the event rulebook before any head-knee work is trained as a scoring plan. ☐ Clinch drilling starts with grip position and balance before any knee is thrown. A partner who loses balance is released, never pulled down by the grip. ☐ Knee volume builds over weeks. Hip flexor, groin, and lower-back pain that lingers between sessions cuts volume before it cuts form. ☐ In catch-and-knee and sweep-adjacent drills, the falling partner's breakfall comes first. Nobody is dumped without warning at any stage in this book. ☐ Sparring applications in this book are controlled games with agreed contact. A knee thrown harder than the agreement ends the round, not the argument.
Part 1: The Knee Family, Specified
| Knee | Thai name | Shape | Range | Primary target | Scoring note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Straight knee | Khao trong | Straight line, hip thrust | Long to clinch | Body midline, lowered head | The spear; scores on drive and displacement |
| Curve knee | Khao khong | Arc in from the side | Middle to clinch | Ribs, side of body | Scores around a braced guard |
| Diagonal knee | Khao chiang | Rises at 45 degrees | Middle | Body, between guard arms | Splits guards set for the other two |
| Horizontal knee | Khao tat | Shin across, knee leading sideways | Clinch | Belt line, thigh | Moves the opponent inside the clinch |
| Small knee | Khao lek | Short, rhythmic | Clinch | Body, thigh | Sustained clinch scoring under Thai criteria |
| Flying knee | Khao loi | Leaping straight knee | Long, committed | Head, chest | High risk; a closer, not a staple |
| Knee bomb | Khao yom | Pull down hard plus straight knee up | Clinch | Body, lowered head | Needs a real pull to exist at all |
