SAFETY, BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE ☐ Clinch work starts at drill speed with a partner who agrees to it. Neck pressure in training is control pressure, never a crank, never a yank. A tie is won by position, not by hurting a neck. ☐ Knees in clinch drills land on the thigh, the pad of the stomach at drill power, or are shown and stopped short, exactly as your kru calls it. Full-power knees to a partner's body are for the pads, not for each other. ☐ Either partner can end any exchange with a tap on the body or the word "break." The exchange stops first. Questions after. ☐ Dizziness, a jarred neck, or a knee that landed wrong ends your clinch work for the day. Tell your kru. Necks are not a toughness category. ☐ The stronger clincher releases a beaten position and resets. Milking a folded partner for a full round is not training, it is drowning practice, and it is banned in this book.
The Five-Second Card
Tape this order to the inside of your head. When the grab lands, run it top to bottom before anything clever.
| Second | The job | What right looks like | The tell that it is wrong |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Hips in | Hips step or settle forward, under your shoulders, close to theirs | Hips hanging back while your head is pulled forward. You are a hinge |
| 2 | Short neck | Shoulders shrugged up, chin tucked, neck made short | Neck long and exposed, head up like a periscope, a handle waiting to be pulled |
| 3 | Head posted | Forehead resting against their temple, cheek, or shoulder | Head floating free in the middle, available to be steered |
| 4 | Hands inside | At least one hand or forearm inside their arms, on a bicep, collarbone, or inner elbow | Both hands clawing at the outside of their forearms |
| 5 | Feet walking | Small steps, adjusting constantly, base under your hips | Feet planted in cement, waiting to be turned |
The freeze test. If you cannot say which of the five you are missing while it is happening, you are not missing one. You are skipping the card. Slow the drill down until the card runs, then speed the drill back up.
