Mat Manual companion guide to "Harai Goshi Is Not Uchi Mata." Print it. The article teaches the throw from its comparison outward. This reference specifies the technique, grades hip placement from the side of the mat, programs the entry in checklists and building work, and prints the uchi mata distinction as a comparison table tori and uke can drill against, rep by rep.

BEFORE ANYTHING: safety and partner agreements, pass or fail ☐ Ukemi (falling technique) before throws, always. Uke receiving harai goshi must have a checked rotating side and back fall, chin tucked, arm slapping wide, no straight posted arm, before the first full rep in this book. ☐ The sweep contacts uke's legs and travels. It never chops sideways into the side of a knee, and it is never swung at a partner whose feet are tangled, turned away, or already falling. ☐ Tori keeps uke's sleeve through every landing in drilling. A rotating fall over a hip is guided to the mat, never abandoned halfway. ☐ No twisting out of a settled load. Once uke is loaded on the hip, the agreed answer is the fall. Both partners sign that rule in Part 28 before speed work starts. ☐ Pain in a knee, hip, or shoulder that changes how you move the next day leaves drill territory. Record it in Part 26 and route it to a clinician. ☐ Crash mat first for new receivers and for every stage where landing grades are still being earned. Space on the landing side is checked before every set.
Part 1: The Technique Card
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| Name | Harai goshi |
| Translation | Sweeping hip throw |
| Classification | Koshi-waza (hip technique) |
| Gokyo placement | Dai Nikyo, the second set of the Gokyo no Waza (the Kodokan's standard syllabus of throws) |
| Tori | The thrower |
| Uke | The partner who receives the technique |
| Tori's job in one line | Pull uke to the front corner, turn the hip across and under uke's centre, load uke onto it, sweep both legs out, and rotate uke over the hip |
| Hikite | The pulling hand, on uke's sleeve. Starts the kuzushi and keeps the rotation going |
| Tsurite | The lifting hand, on uke's lapel. Lifts, steers, and drives the finish around |
| Kuzushi | Balance breaking, to uke's front corner |
| Tsukuri | The entry: the pull, the step across, and the turn that puts the hip under the load |
| Kake | The execution: the sweep and the rotation, arriving as one event |
| Uke's fall | Wide rotating fall onto the back and side, over the hip |
| The throw fails when | Uke is not loaded at the freeze. If uke can step off the hip, there is no throw yet (Part 4) |
| Core grips | Classic sleeve and lapel in ai-yotsu (same-side stances); pictures for kenka-yotsu (opposite stances) in Part 2 |
| Main counters | The step-around before the load, counters against a load with no pull behind it (Part 16) |
| The distinction | Part 9 prints it as a table. Hip loads and leg sweeps outside here; no load and leg lifts inside in the other throw |
