Mat Manual companion guide to "The Hip Throws: O Goshi and Its Family." Print it. The article teaches the family as one mechanic at three settings. This playbook grades the load that all three settings share, cards each throw on its own, programs the shared fit-in set that tests the load rather than the entry, and leaves its comparison table for you to complete from your own randori.
Name: ______________________________ Dojo: ______________________________ Grade: ______________ Stance: ☐ Right (migi) ☐ Left (hidari) First throw of the family: ______________
BEFORE ANYTHING: safety and partner agreements, pass or fail ☐ Ukemi (falling technique) before throws, always. Uke receiving any throw in this book must have a checked rotating side and back fall, chin tucked, arm slapping wide, no straight posted arm, before the first full rep. ☐ The load is held, never heaved. A load that cannot be held for two seconds with a straight back is not thrown. That rule is printed on the cards in Parts 3 to 5 and it does not bend for a strong player. ☐ No twisting out of a settled load. Once uke's weight is on tori's hip, the agreed answer is the fall. Tori never forces a finish against a twisting partner. Either partner stops that rep. ☐ Tori keeps sleeve control through every landing in drilling, so the rotation over the hip is guided to the mat. ☐ Back pain that changes how you move the next day, any sharp hip or knee pain, or pain that returns across three sessions leaves drill territory. Record it in Part 26 and route it to a clinician. ☐ Crash mat first for new receivers, and space on the landing side checked before every set. Hip throws land uke in front of tori, and that space belongs to the fall.
Part 1: The Family Technique Cards
| Field | Uki goshi | O goshi | Tsurikomi goshi |
|---|---|---|---|
| Translation | Floating hip throw | Major hip throw | Lifting pulling hip throw |
| Classification | Koshi-waza (hip technique) | Koshi-waza | Koshi-waza |
| Gokyo placement | Dai Ikkyo, the first set of the Gokyo no Waza (the Kodokan's standard syllabus) | Dai Ikkyo | Dai Nikyo, the second set |
| Hip across | About half, at uke's belt line | The whole hip, under uke's centre | The whole hip, set deeper and further through |
| Knees | Slight bend. The turn does the work | Bent under the load. The stand-up throws | Bent furthest of the three |
| Hands | Sleeve hand leads the turn, far arm around the back | Sleeve pulls around, far arm settles the load | Lapel hand lifts and pulls as the entry travels |
| Uke's path | Floated around the turn, almost level | Up and over the hip on the stand-up | Straightened onto the hip, then up and over |
| The entry it wants | A moving turn, uke travelling with you | A close, square entry with time to load | A bent-over or sitting-back partner |
| Family place | The root throw, and the purest teacher of the turn | The full statement of the load | The setting for a posture that hides the load |
| Tori | The thrower, in all three rows | ||
| Uke | The partner who receives the technique, in all three rows |
Order of learning in this book. Uki goshi's turn first, at low volume. O goshi's load second, as the graded centre of the book. Tsurikomi goshi third, once the load is a habit, because fetching a hidden load with a habit missing is how back lifts are built.
