Mat Manual companion guide to "Holding Them Down Isn't Pinning Them." Print it. The article teaches why control and turning are different skills. This book builds the turning game: the nelson families, cradle turns, the arm bar and far-side turns, chains, pin holding against the bridge, and the counts kept honestly.

SAFETY — TURNING WITHOUT WRECKING NECKS AND SHOULDERS ☐ A nelson steers the head and levers the arm. It never cranks the neck. If their neck is the thing hurting, your angle is wrong: stop the rep, re-set, or the coach stops it for you. ☐ Control before submission, in turning as everywhere. Turns are run at the speed the bottom wrestler can defend honestly, and any submission that appears inside a turn follows catch-and-release: slow, position first, instant release on any tap. ☐ Never answer a bridge by driving down through their neck or wrenching a hold tighter. Beat the bridge with weight placement and angle (Part 8), or re-run the turn. ☐ Hammerlock and bar-arm turns stop at position in drilling. Shoulder pressure is never forced to "finish the turn." The turn finishes by walking them over, not by bending them further. ☐ Bridge work loads the bottom wrestler's neck. Bottom partners bridge by their own training stage (see the neck and bridge progression in this library); any neck pain stops the round. ☐ Tap early, verbally if needed, in every drill here. A turn defended late is a pin; a turn endured into injury is a failure of the room.
Part 1: The Pin Standard Used in This Book
Rulesets disagree on the count, and this book trains to the strict end so any count you meet feels short.
| Ruleset (general practice) | What counts as the fall | Note |
|---|---|---|
| US scholastic folkstyle | Both shoulders/scapulae held, referee's two-second count | The common school standard |
| US college folkstyle | Both shoulders held, about a one-second count in recent rule sets | Faster; rewards a solid settle |
| Freestyle (international) | Shoulders exposed/held under its own fall rules | A held fall still ends it; exposure scores without one |
| Historic catch contests | A fall held for an agreed count; agreements varied by match and promoter | No single governing standard ever existed for catch |
| Modern catch events and gym matches | The event's own published count | Read the rules sheet on the day |
| THIS BOOK'S TRAINING STANDARD | Both shoulders held for a slow, honest three count | Train here; compete anywhere |
Shoulder check used in every drill: the holder must be able to say, out loud, "both down" and mean both scapulae, not one shoulder and a hope. A partner or coach verifies in learning rounds.
