Mat Manual companion guide to "The Granby Is Not a Peterson." Print it. The article teaches the distinction and the reads. This book builds the roll behind its gate: entry cards from referee's position and the flattened ride, mechanics progressions at rising following weight, timing drills against the follow at three commitments, and the Peterson comparison table printed for the wall.

BEFORE ANYTHING: THE GATE AND THE AGREEMENTS ☐ The Granby is gated behind the bridging and neck progression of the Neck and Bridge Progression guide. A student whose neck is not ready for the roll does not drill the roll. Pass/fail. No entry card in this book is opened before Part 1 is signed. ☐ Every roll in this book travels across the shoulder line. The head bears no weight at any point, in any drill, at any stage. A rep that loads the head or neck stops the set and returns the student to solo work. ☐ No head posting to start a roll. The forehead post belongs to the bridging progression, taught in its own book, under its own rules. ☐ A roll going wrong midway is abandoned flat, belly down and safe, by rule. Completing a bad roll out of pride is a conduct matter, not a style point. ☐ Any neck pain, tingling, numbness, weakness, or dizziness stops rolling work for that student that day and is told to the coach before the student leaves the mat. ☐ Riders follow honestly at the signed stage and never fall across a rolling partner's neck or head. A rider who cannot follow safely rides a dummy or a coach instead.
Part 1: The Gate — Neck Readiness, Signed Before Any Entry
The gate is this book's first technique. Nothing after this part exists for a student who has not passed it.
| Gate item | The standard | Where it is earned |
|---|---|---|
| Screening | The neck screening in the Neck and Bridge Progression completed, with no stop-rule symptoms | That guide, Part 1 |
| Bridging stages | The bridging stages passed at the level the progression sets for rolling work, on three separate days | That guide, its stage table |
| Solo roll line | Shoulder rolls named clean by a watcher at walking speed, both sides: contact across the shoulder blade, head touching nothing under load | Part 3 of this book |
| Symptom record | No neck symptoms logged in the student's recent training, and any neck history cleared by a clinician and the coach | Coach's record |
| Coach sign-off | The coach has watched the student's solo rolls and signed the gate below | This part |
| Student | Screening clear ☐ | Bridging stages ☐ | Solo line ☐ | Symptom record ☐ | Coach signature | Date |

What a student behind the gate trains instead. The stand-up, the switch, and the sit-out platform are a complete bottom game, and Parts 2 and 9 of this book are open to every student. The gate closes one door, for a season, on one student. It does not close the room.
