Mat Manual companion guide to "Standing Up Is a Chain." Print it. The article makes the claim this book trains: getting up from the bottom in catch wrestling is a sequence, sit-out, switch against the follow, stand-up through the space, face them in neutral. This book teaches each link on its own, at beginner level, then chains them, then runs the top player's follow-and-chop mirror chain against them.

BEFORE ANYTHING: PARTNER SAFETY AND AGREEMENTS ☐ All partner work runs at agreed speed, stated out loud before each drill. Whistle rounds (Part 14) are the only full-speed work in this book, and they come in week 4 only. ☐ Nobody drives a partner back down to the mat through a posted arm. When a stand-up is stopped in drilling, the bottom player is guided down to a hip or shoulder, or allowed to sit back to base. A straight posted arm is never loaded with a falling body, at any speed, in any card. ☐ The chop in the follow-and-chop is a controlled hand across the arm at agreed pressure, never a strike down onto the arm or the back of the neck. Contact on the neck is a stop-and-reset fault. ☐ Standing players are never tackled, tripped, or pushed from behind in this book's drills. The rush at the standing player (Part 10) is a coached, announced entry at drill speed until week 4. ☐ Landings and flattenings land on hip and shoulder. Head and neck are never driven into the mat. Students practice the landing shapes solo in Part 4 before any partner flattens them. ☐ Stop on any pain, dizziness, or loss of control, from either partner, with no argument and no finishing the rep. Log it in the session log (Part 16).
Part 1: The Chain at a Glance
| Link | Your move | Their likely answer | What their answer gives you |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0. Base | Elbows in, hips under, posts set | Ride settles on you | A start. Nothing in this book works from flat |
| 1. Sit-out | Hips out, long sit, hand posted | Follow and chop | Their weight committed forward and across |
| 2. Switch | Hip heist back through, under their weight | Weight chasing to the new side | Space on the side they just left |
| 3. Stand-up | Rise through the space, hips under, head up | Rush, or settle back | Neutral, faced up |
| 4. Face them | Stance set, hands up, square | Their shot or tie-up | Your sprawl, or your re-shot |
Chain law: each link is read off the one before it, and a coach who watches only whether you stood up is watching the least important part of the rep. No follow, no switch. No switch, no stand-up. The sequence is the technique.
