SAFETY, BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE ☐ Forms are performed on a clear, even floor with space for the full pattern in every direction. Students check the space before the ready stance, every run. ☐ Turn and balance work stops for dizziness or unsteadiness. The student sits out turning drills for the day; the chart records it without penalty. ☐ No partner drill in this book involves contact. Partner jobs are marking, checking, and calling, and partners keep clear of the performer's pattern lines. ☐ Grading-condition runs (silent, full standard) are performed fresh, never as the last run of an exhausting session, because the standard being measured is the form, not fatigue. ☐ A student who is ill, hurt, or returning from injury tells the instructor before class; chapter work adapts and full runs wait.
Part 1: The Specification
Every drill in this book is measured against this page. Your instructor's standard governs where it differs; the structure does not change.
| Element | The specification |
|---|---|
| Form | Taegeuk Il Jang, first of the Taegeuk series; trigram Keon, heaven |
| Count | 18 movements on the standard Kukkiwon count; school counts vary around the turns and courtesies — your instructor's count is your standard |
| Pattern | Three-line pattern shared by the Taegeuk series: up the center, across, back, across, home; begins and ends facing the start direction |
| Stances | Walking stance (ap seogi) and front stance (ap kubi) — their distinction is the form's central examination |
| Hand techniques | Low block (arae makgi), middle punch (momtong jireugi), inside body block (momtong an makgi) |
| Kihap | On the final movement, number 18, on the standard count |

Count honesty. Some schools and older references number the sequence differently around movements 6 and 12 and around the turns. The material — three techniques, two stances, turns both directions — does not vary. Learn your instructor's numbering; this chart's structure is the map, not a ruling against your school.
