BEFORE ANYTHING: SAFETY AND PARTNER AGREEMENTS — PASS/FAIL ☐ The tap is instant and total. A tap by hand, foot, or voice, or the word stop from either partner or the instructor, ends the rep in the same breath. Releasing late, even once, fails the session's safety standard and is logged. ☐ Joint locks in this book are applied by position only: set by stepping and placement, settled on slowly, never snatched, cranked, or finished by speed or force. A lock applied by force fails the rep however well the rest of it went. ☐ Grabs are fed honestly and at the agreed strength, stated before each set. The feeder grips to hold, not to injure, and never grabs hair, fingers individually, or a healing injury. ☐ Strikes inside answers are thrown to pads, to open air at agreed distance, or pulled to light touch on the body areas your school permits, as the card states. No answer strike is thrown at a partner's head, throat, or joints. ☐ Every rep in this book ends with the leave: distance, guard up, watching. A pair that resets from grabbing range has not finished the rep. ☐ Stop on any pain, dizziness, or loss of control, from either partner, with no argument and no finishing the set first. A student with an injured wrist, elbow, or shoulder tells the instructor before class and feeds with the other side or marks instead.
Part 1: The Grammar at a Glance
Every card in this book is the same four beats wearing a different grab. Learn the beats and the cards become examples; learn only the cards and each grab is a new subject.
| Beat | The job | The body action | What success looks like |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Free the hand | End the grip at its weak point | The trapped hand travels toward the thumb gap, the seam where fingertip meets thumb, with the body's step and turn behind it | The grip opens without a strength contest; the free hand guards |
| 2. Take the angle | Stop being the target's center | Step off the center line to the outside of the grabbing arm as the release happens | You stand beside the grabbing arm; your road out is open |
| 3. Answer once | Buy the leaving with one action | One strike, control, or lock, sized to the problem, per the card | One beat only; a lock set by position and held, not cranked |
| 4. Leave | Make the grab unrepeatable | Release, step away on the angle, hands up, watching, keep moving | Distance grows until a new grab needs a new decision |
Grammar law. The beats run in this order, at every stage, against every grab in this book. A rep that skips a beat is re-drilled, not applauded; improvisation is earned in Part 17, after the grammar survives resistance.
