BEFORE ANYTHING: SCOPE AND SAFETY ☐ Kata practice is solo form work. Partner checks in this book run at agreed speed and agreed pressure, stated out loud before each set, with either partner able to stop any rep with one word. ☐ The low sections load the knees and hips. Depth is built inside a pain-free range. Pain in the knee, hip, or back during the low work means stop, raise the stance, and report it, per the stance-health standards in this library. ☐ Fumikomi (stamping step) is a controlled stamp, not a jump landed on a straight leg. Students with knee or ankle problems take the entry as a firm step, per their instructor's direction. ☐ Practice space rule: a full kata's floor length in every direction, checked before the first rep. Bassai Dai travels on its entries. ☐ This book teaches one count: 42 movements, in seven sections. Schools split the combined actions in this kata differently and number the middle sections differently. Your instructor's version governs in your dojo. Note variations in Part 1 and train the version you will be graded on.
Part 1: The Kata Card
| Fact | Detail |
|---|---|
| Name | Bassai Dai, usually translated "to storm a fortress" or "to penetrate a fortress" |
| Place in the syllabus | In most Shotokan syllabi the first kata past the Heian series; a brown-belt centrepiece in many schools. Dai (large) distinguishes it from Bassai Sho (small), a separate kata this book does not teach |
| Movements | 42 in the count taught here |
| Sections | Seven, mapped in Part 2 |
| Main stances | Zenkutsu dachi (front stance), kokutsu dachi (back stance), kiba dachi (horse-riding stance), low stances in the sweeping and scooping sections |
| Signature material | Doubled and supported blocks, fumikomi entries, low sweeping work, slow haishu uke (back-hand block), mikazuki geri (crescent kick) caught into empi uchi (elbow strike), yama zuki (mountain punch: both fists striking together at two levels), sukui uke (scooping block), closing shuto uke (knife-hand block) series |
| Running standards | Penetration on the entries; both hands working together in the same count; level discipline through the drops and rises |
| Embusen (floor pattern) | Drives forward, cuts sideways, drops low, turns back through covered ground, closes in back stance; starts and finishes on the same point when performed correctly |
| Typical grading place | Senior kyu and dan gradings in most syllabi; your school's ladder governs: ______________ |
| Performance time guide | Commonly around a minute or more at grading tempo, with the slow movements genuinely slow; your instructor's expectation: ______________ |
