Mat Manual companion guide to "Put Them on the Canvas: Clinch Sweeps and Dumps." Print it. The article makes the family's argument: clinch finishes are balance theft, not lifting. This book drills them under standards. Every card carries the landing rule in print, the progressions rise through resistance stages both partners can name, and a rep where your partner cannot land safely is a failed rep, whoever's highlight it would have been.
Name: ______________________________ Gym: ______________________________ Coach: ______________________________ Stance: ☐ Orthodox ☐ Southpaw Falling gate passed (Part 3): ☐ Date: ______________
BEFORE ANYTHING: SCOPE AND SAFETY ☐ THE LANDING RULE, PASS/FAIL: a finish counts only when your partner lands under control and can post with a free arm. If the posting arm is trapped, if the landing cannot be guided, or if the finish needs a lift or a drive downward, the rep is void and the set stops for a reset. No exceptions for speed, closeness to the bell, or a good picture. ☐ NO SLAMMING, EVER: a dump in this book moves a partner's balance past their base and guides the fall. Nobody is picked up, driven down, or thrown onto a partner who is tangled, airborne without control, or unable to land. A slam ends the student's clinch throwing until the coach re-gates them. ☐ Falling gate before finishes: the receiving partner must pass Part 3 (breakfall standards checked on the gym's mats) before the first full finish in this book. Pass or fail is recorded, not assumed. ☐ Surface: finishes are trained on mats or canvas fit for falling, checked before the session, with space cleared in every direction a clinched pair can travel. No finishes on hard floor, in a crowded clinch scrum, or near ring posts and edges without the coach's specific setup. ☐ Resistance rises only through Part 14's named stages, which both partners state out loud before the set. Either partner lowers the stage with one word, at any time, and the word is obeyed before the next rep. ☐ Neck and head honesty: clinch grips never crank the neck sideways to force a turn, and a partner whose head or neck is in pain stops the set and reports it. Sharp pain anywhere, a head knock, or dizziness ends the session's throwing for that student. ☐ The stop word ends any set instantly, from any partner, for any reason. Cause is logged in Part 25.
Part 1: The Family Card
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| Family | Clinch sweeps and dumps: off-balancing a clinched partner to the canvas |
| Core finishes | Inside trip off the turn; sweep against the posted leg; dump from the body lock side |
| The mechanic in one line | Move the partner's weight where their feet are not, block or remove the fixing foot, and guide a landing they can handle |
| LANDING STANDARD (printed on every card in this book) | Partner posts with a free arm, lands on back or side under guidance, head clear, at the speed the slowest part of the movement set. Post or it does not count |
| What it is not | Not a lift, not a slam, not a throw of a partner whose posting arm is trapped |
| The finishes exist when | The partner's weight is travelling, posting, or committed across a line (Part 4 pictures) |
| A finish fails honestly when | The partner stays square and based, which means the picture never opened; abandon and re-win the grip |
| Rules note | Permitted finishes and their scoring vary by ruleset and gym. Your coach and your event's written rules govern what is used and where |
| Your gym's variations | Permitted finishes in class: ______________ In bouts: ______________ Coach's landing cue: ______________ |
