Mat Manual companion guide to "Parry, Catch, Block: Your Hands Defend Punches Too." Print it. The article teaches the three hand defences and the answer each one loads. This book cards every defence against every punch, stages feed-and-answer drills at rising speed, retrains the shell as a one-beat tool, and scores sparring games on answers alone.

BEFORE ANYTHING: SAFETY AND PARTNER AGREEMENTS ☐ Defence drills are fed punches before they are real punches. The feeder throws at the speed and power the part prints, to the target the part names. A feeder who speeds up to test the defender ends the drill. Pass/fail. ☐ Gloves are on for every partner part in this book, the feeder's and the defender's. Palm catches are practised with the glove on, as they will be used. ☐ Head contact follows the gym's standing sparring agreements at every stage. Rising speed in this book means rising feed speed at agreed contact, never rising power to the head. ☐ A defender who is rattled, dizzy, or hurt stops, says so, and sits out. Defending while rattled is not a drill in this book at any level. ☐ The catch is a meeting, not a grab. No partner holds, twists, or pulls a punching arm in any drill here. A held arm is a broken agreement, and the round restarts.
Part 1: The Defence Map, Which Hand Meets Which Punch
The whole book on one table. Post it where the gloves are kept.
| Incoming punch | First choice | Second choice | The answer it loads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jab | Rear-hand parry across, or lead-hand catch | Forearm block, lead side | Cross off the parry; clinch entry off the catch |
| Cross | Lead-hand parry across | Lead-hand catch, if read early | Lead hook or lead kick off the opened side |
| Lead hook | Lead forearm block, turned in | High cover for one beat, then exit | Rear roundhouse off the settled stance |
| Rear hook | Rear forearm block with a step off line | High cover for one beat, then exit | Angle out, or clinch entry as their turn finishes |
| Lead uppercut | Lead forearm block down the middle | Step back behind the guard | Cross to the body line their arm left |
| Rear uppercut | Rear forearm block down the middle | Catch is not offered here; block or step | Lead hook as their rising arm passes |
| Any punch, read late | High cover, one beat only | None; the cover is the last resort | A step, then a real defence (Part 9) |
Assignment note. Schools vary in which hand they assign to some of these pairings, and a student's coach's assignments outrank this table. Drill one system until it is automatic. The logic under the table does not vary: straight punches are redirected or met, swings are blocked, and every contact loads a named answer.
