SAFETY, BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE ☐ Catch-and-release is the law of every drill in this book: the kicker may call "release" at any moment, and the caught leg is returned immediately. No finish is ever completed on a called release. ☐ Kicks fed in catch drills are thrown at the stage's agreed power, never above it. The kicker owns the feed's honesty. A feed above the agreement ends the drill. ☐ Sweeps and dumps in training are performed to the mat, controlled, at the stage's intensity. The falling partner's breakfall comes before the finish's style. ☐ Ankles are hurt when a caught leg is twisted or when a kicker fights a dump's first motion. Catches hold the leg; they never wrench it. Kickers ride one step of any dump, then re-base. ☐ Catch stages run early in a session, not as a finisher. Tired legs and late catches are how ribs and ankles get hurt. ☐ Sparring games in this book are fenced games at agreed contact. No full-power kicks are thrown at a partner who is standing on one leg.
Part 1: The Two Catches, Specified
The roundhouse catch
| Element | The standard |
|---|---|
| Read | Kicking hip turns, support foot pivots, weight commits to the kick |
| Step | Slight step in and toward the kicking side, turning a fraction with the arc |
| Catch point | The leg met early in its arc, before the power peak at the arc's end |
| Catching arm | Outside arm scoops across, securing above the ankle |
| Pin | Leg trapped between the catching arm and the ribs and hip, elbow down and tight |
| Guard hand | The free hand stays home at the cheek the entire catch |
| Posture | Tall, weight settled, no fold at the waist |
| First beat | The follow-up starts inside the first half-second |
The teep catch
| Element | The standard |
|---|---|
| Read | Chamber rises on the center line, hips begin to travel |
| Step | A fraction off the teep's line as the kick extends |
| Catch point | The dead point of full extension, where the foot's speed dies |
| Scoop | One hand sweeps down and under the foot, lifting it onto the forearm and body |
| Pin | Foot and shin secured against the forearm, ribs, and hip |
| Guard hand | The other hand never leaves the guard to grab |
| Posture | Tall; the remaining push spends itself on the air beside you |
| First beat | The follow-up starts inside the first half-second |
