Mat Manual companion guide to "When Sparring Stops Being Training." Print it. The article explains why rounds heat up on their own and why fighters freeze. This book runs the room that prevents both: an intensity charter you fill in and post, level drills, mirroring-down training, ratchet-interruption formats, a staged freeze-reset progression, pairing matrices, coach scripts, and a round audit that shows your gym its own numbers.

SAFETY, BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE — THESE RULES OVERRIDE EVERY DRILL IN THIS BOOK ☐ Every round has a level agreed out loud before it starts (Part 2). No agreement, no round. ☐ Protective equipment for every live format: mouthguard, gloves of the gym's sparring weight, shin guards, groin protection, and headgear where your gym requires it. Equipment is checked by the coach before hard formats, not assumed. ☐ The stop signal (your gym's word and gesture, written in Part 1) ends any round, drill, or exchange instantly, for anyone, at any level, with no explanation owed and no penalty attached. Ever. ☐ A fighter who is rocked, whose legs go, who cannot keep a guard up, or who asks for time is done for that round. A fighter with headache, dizziness, blurred vision, nausea, or unusual confusion after training is done for the day, does not drive themselves, and is assessed under the gym's head-injury protocol and local medical guidance. ☐ Elbows, knees to the head, and head kicks follow your gym's written rules for each level (Part 1). Where this book and your gym's rules differ, your gym's rules govern. ☐ Beginners enter live sparring only through the Part 8 progression gates. Nobody's first sparring experience is an open round.
