Mat Manual companion guide to "Fit Everywhere Except in the Ring." Print it. The article explains why fit people gas in round two. This book fixes it: a repeatable self-test, the gear system drilled on the bag and pads, tension and breathing work, an eight-week conditioning plan built in round shapes, sparring formats with gear caps, and a twelve-week log.
Name: ______________________________ Gym: ______________________________ Weight: __________ Resting pulse (morning): __________
SAFETY, BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE ☐ Conditioning is progressive. No week in this plan increases total hard rounds by more than one round or total interval time by more than about 10 percent. Sudden jumps are how fit people get injured doing fitness work. ☐ Chest pain, pain that radiates to the arm or jaw, faintness, wheezing that does not settle within minutes of stopping, or a racing pulse that will not come down: stop the session, sit down, tell the coach, and seek medical care the same day. Fitness testing never outranks these signs. ☐ Sparring formats in this plan run at the gym's agreed intensity levels with full protective equipment (mouthguard, gloves, shin guards, headgear where your gym requires it). A gear cap is an intensity agreement. Breaking it ends the round. ☐ Heat: train hydrated, rest in shade or airflow between rounds where possible, and treat headache, nausea, confusion, or stopping sweating in heat as stop signals for the day. ☐ If you are cutting weight, returning from illness, or returning from injury, Parts 6 and 17 set the reduced entry. Do not start the plan at Week 1 full dose from a layoff.
Part 1: The Gear System (Your Copy of the Article's Table, With Tests)
| Gear | Output | Breathing test | Talk test | Used for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Cruise | 50–60% | Nasal in, controlled out | Short sentences possible | Moving, measuring, recovering inside the round |
| 2 Work | 70–80% | Rhythmic, exhale per strike | A few words at a time | Honest combinations and scoring kicks |
| 3 Surge | ~90% | Hard, still rhythmic | No talking | Committed flurries and counters, 10–20 s |
| 4 Empty | 100% | Maximal | None | Final seconds or a visible finish only |
Gear honesty rule. A gear is what your technique looks like, not what your effort feels like. If your guard drops, your chin rises, or your strikes stop returning home, you are one gear above the one you named. Drop down until technique is clean. That clean level is your true gear today.
