Mat Manual companion guide to "Sode Tsurikomi Goshi: The Sleeve Does the Lifting." Print it. The article makes the throw's argument: the sleeve lifts, the hip spends the load. This book is the working reference. It carries the grip cards, the lift standard as calls a partner can make out loud, uchikomi variants that keep the lift honest at volume, entry progressions from a static sleeve to a moving one, combination exits into ko-uchi gari, and a twelve-week plan built on the seoi pattern.
Player: ______________________________ Club: ______________________________ Coach: ______________________________ Stance: ☐ Right (migi) ☐ Left (hidari) Partner stance tonight: ☐ Ai-yotsu (matching) ☐ Kenka-yotsu (opposite)
BEFORE ANYTHING: SCOPE AND SAFETY ☐ THE LIFT RULE, PASS/FAIL: the sleeve lift must be visible and called before the turn begins. A rep where tori turns first and hauls is a failed rep and stops the set, whoever threw it, however clean the landing looked. ☐ Ukemi gate before throws: uke receiving sode tsurikomi goshi must pass Part 3 (forward and side falling checked, chin tucked, no straight posted arm) before the first full rep in this book. Pass or fail is recorded, not assumed. ☐ Tori keeps uke's sleeve through every landing, drilling speed included. An unguided fall is a failed rep in this book. ☐ Never throw uke across your supporting knee line. The finish line runs in front of tori, slightly to the lifted side. A finish travelling sideways across the body stops the set for a line reset. ☐ Shoulder and elbow honesty: the lift loads uke's shoulder and elbow on the lifted side. Any sharp or pinching pain in either joint, for either player, ends throwing work for the day and is reported to the coach. ☐ The stop word ends any set instantly, from any player, for any reason. Cause is logged in Part 25.
Part 1: The Technique Card
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| Name | Sode tsurikomi goshi |
| Translation | Sleeve lifting-and-pulling hip throw: sode (sleeve), tsurikomi (lifting and pulling in), goshi (hip) |
| Classification | Koshi-waza (hip technique) in the Kodokan system |
| Tori's job in one line | Lift uke up and forward on one sleeve side with both hands, turn in under the lifted load, and throw uke over the hip to a landing in front |
| The lift's job | Raises uke onto the toes on the lifted side, opens the chest, and moves the weight past the front foot before any turn starts |
| LIFT STANDARD (printed on every card in this book) | Sleeve high, uke tall, weight forward, called before the turn. If uke got shorter, you pulled down and the rep is void |
| Uke's fall | Forward and side fall over the hip, chin tucked, free arm slapping wide, never a straight posted arm |
| The throw exists in | Two pictures: off a moving sleeve as uke reaches or steps in, and off a settled grip-up against a partner whose posture the lift can still change |
| The throw fails when | Uke stays settled and flat, which means the lift never happened or the turn started before it could |
| Core grips | Both hands on one sleeve side: sleeve-end hand lifts, second hand at sleeve or elbow steers (Part 4) |
| Your club's variations | Second hand placement: ______________ Finish line cue: ______________ Coach's lift cue: ______________ |
