Mat Manual companion guide to "Drop Seoi and Your Knees: The Suwari Question." Print it. The article makes the argument. This book makes the decision and then protects it: the three variants on cards, a decision worksheet that prices your build, history, volume, and surface, landing mechanics and the drop-and-shift specified, a weekly drop-volume tracker with a knee health log, surface rules, a strength support plan, and a conversion plan for players changing variants without losing the throw.

Player: ______________________________ Club: ______________________________ Coach: ______________________________ Height: ______________ Weight class: ______________ Knee history declared (Part 19): ☐

BEFORE ANYTHING: THE AGREEMENTS ☐ Knee history is declared before drop work starts in any block: injuries, surgery, and current symptoms, written in Part 19. A partner and a coach cannot protect a knee they do not know about. ☐ Pain is data, not weakness. Knee pain during a drop set ends the set. Swelling reported the next day enters the log the day it is noticed, not the day it becomes undeniable. ☐ Nobody's drop volume is increased and sympathised with at the same time. Volume is planned in Part 12, on good surfaces, per Part 13. ☐ Young players follow their federation's guidance on dropping throws. No worksheet in this book outranks a federation rule about growing knees. ☐ This book prices risk and teaches mechanics. It does not diagnose knees. Persistent pain, swelling, locking, or giving way is a clinician's appointment, and the book's stop rules in Part 11 say when.

Part 1: The Family Map

Part 1: The Family Map
VariantKodokan homeKnees meet the mat?The throw's bargain
Standing seoi-nage (morote and ippon forms)Seoi-nageNoFull control, abandonable, priced in squat load
One-knee dropSeoi-otoshiOne, angledMost of the drop's depth at a shared cost
Both-knees drop (suwari-seoi in dojo speech)Seoi-otoshiBoth, every repMaximum depth and speed at the highest joint price

Reading the map. These are three prices for one throw family, and a career usually spends time at more than one of them: the both-knees drop in a young player's high-volume years is a common story, and so is the one-knee conversion at thirty-five. The map is not a ranking of courage. It is a price list, and this book's position is that prices should be read before they are paid.
