Mat Manual companion guide to "Ura Nage: The Counter That Throws Backward." Print it. The article teaches the back-arch counter throw and names its safety spine in its first section: the ukemi gate, the landing-side risks, and the crash mat as the only road in. This book carries the technique card with the gate printed on it, entry and lift standards, crash-mat grades, counter progressions, a graded receiving standard for uke, and a twelve-week landing plan.
Player: ______________________________ Club: ______________________________ Coach: ______________________________ Stance: ☐ Right (migi) ☐ Left (hidari) Ukemi gate date (Part 3): ______________
BEFORE ANYTHING: SCOPE AND SAFETY ☐ THE UKEMI GATE, PASS/FAIL: uke receiving ura nage must pass Part 3 (back falls at height on the crash mat, chin tucked, back rounded, arms slapping wide, no posted arm on any rep) before the first full rep in this book. The gate is recorded with a date and re-checked after any layoff or any fall that hurt. Nobody receives this throw on reputation. ☐ CRASH MAT FIRST, ALWAYS: every progression in this book starts on the crash mat and earns the tatami in named grades (Part 10). There is no braver starting point. ☐ LIFT BEFORE ARCH, PASS/FAIL: uke's feet leave the mat on the lift before any arch begins. An arch started against a planted partner stops the set, whoever threw it, however strong it felt. ☐ Landing-side risks are named on Part 1's card and Part 2 in full: uke's head and shoulder line and the posted arm; tori's front knee and lower back on the drop. A rep that lands uke square and high, or folds tori at the waist, is a failed rep. ☐ Many rooms gate this throw by grade, cap who may receive it, or keep it out of open randori entirely. All of those are normal. Your coach's room rule governs in your room, checked in Part 25, never argued with at the mat edge. ☐ Falling volume is capped in Part 10 and Part 14. A tired uke is a badly falling uke, and saying so ends the set, by right, without apology. ☐ The stop word ends any set instantly, from any player, for any reason. Cause is logged in Part 24.
Part 1: The Technique Card
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| Name | Ura nage |
| Translation | Rear throw |
| Classification | Sutemi-waza (sacrifice technique): tori drops and arches to complete the throw |
| Tori's job in one line | Collect a committed forward attack: lock the waist, get the hips under, lift uke clear, then arch so uke lands behind your shoulder line |
| The order | Lock, lift, arch. The last two never trade places |
| UKEMI GATE (printed on every card in this book) | Uke passed Part 3, in date, crash mat in place for the grade being run. If any item fails, there is no throw today, only fit-ins with a gated partner or Part 7 work |
| Uke's fall | At height, backward, rolling across a rounded back and side, chin held tucked, arms slapping wide, never a posted arm |
| The throw exists in | Counter pictures against committed forward throws (Part 5). The direct picture is advanced and rare, stated honestly in Part 13 |
| The throw fails safely when | Tori sets uke back down and keeps the grips. A clean set-down is a success rep in this book |
| Core lock | Both arms around uke's waist from behind, hands joined as your club teaches, chest close to uke's back |
| Your club's variations | Joined-hand grip: ______________ Landing side taught: ______________ Randori gate for this throw: ______________ |
