Mat Manual companion guide to "Tani Otoshi: The Throw Behind You." Print it. The article teaches the valley drop and names its safety spine: the knee line. This book is the working reference. It carries the technique card with the knee-safety standard printed on it, the ukemi gate as a pass/fail checklist, uchikomi variants that drill the line behind the heels, counter-entry progressions timed to a partner's failed forward throw, and a twelve-week landing plan.
Player: ______________________________ Club: ______________________________ Coach: ______________________________ Stance: ☐ Right (migi) ☐ Left (hidari) Partner stance tonight: ☐ Ai-yotsu (matching) ☐ Kenka-yotsu (opposite)
BEFORE ANYTHING: SCOPE AND SAFETY ☐ THE KNEE LINE RULE, PASS/FAIL: tori's body and leg drop behind uke's heels, into empty space, only after uke's weight is already moving backward. Nothing lands across, on, or through uke's planted, loaded leg. A rep that breaks this rule is a failed rep and stops the set, whoever threw it, however clean it looked. ☐ Ukemi gate before throws: uke receiving tani otoshi must pass Part 3 (back fall and backward side fall checked, chin tucked, no straight posted arm) before the first full rep in this book. Pass or fail is recorded, not assumed. ☐ Tori keeps uke's sleeve through every landing, drilling speed included. An unguided backward fall is a failed rep in this book. ☐ Many rooms gate this throw for beginners, and some competition contexts restrict sacrifice throws or their leg positions. Your coach's room rule governs in your room; your event's current ruleset governs at your event. Both are checked in Part 25, not guessed. ☐ Mat awareness: uke falls backward from their position. Check the space behind uke before every set. ☐ The stop word ends any set instantly, from any player, for any reason. Cause is logged in Part 24.
Part 1: The Technique Card
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| Name | Tani otoshi |
| Translation | Valley drop |
| Classification | Sutemi-waza (sacrifice technique) in the Kodokan system; tori drops to the mat to make the throw work |
| Gokyo placement | Dai Yonkyo, the fourth set of the Gokyo no Waza |
| Tori's job in one line | Move uke's weight backward, step close across the front, and sit back behind uke's heel line so uke falls over a line their heels cannot step past |
| The leg's job | Marks the line behind the heels. It never lands across a leg, never reaps, and never drives sideways |
| KNEE-SAFETY STANDARD (printed on every card in this book) | Weight moving backward first. Step close. Line behind the heels. Drop into empty space. If any item fails, abandon the throw and keep the grips |
| Uke's fall | Backward fall over the low line, landing on back and side, chin tucked, arms slapping wide, never a straight posted arm |
| The throw exists in | Two pictures: counter on the rock back from a failed forward entry, and direct entry off a real advance redirected backward (Part 5) |
| The throw fails when | Uke can step back out of the line, which means the weight never moved or the step was too slow |
| Core grips | Classic sleeve and lapel; same-side pictures in kenka-yotsu (Part 4) |
| Your club's variations | Finish position (seated / to one side): ______________ Randori gate for this throw: ______________ Coach's line cue: ______________ |
