Mat Manual companion guide to "Your Takedowns Work in Drilling and Die in Live Wrestling." Print it. The article names the disease: drilling supplies the setup and the fall for free. This book supplies them for real — five shots specified, a setup mapped to every shot, a finish mapped to every defense, chains that connect them, and an eight-week resistance curriculum that stops the drilling from lying.

SAFETY — READ BEFORE ANY LIVE TAKEDOWN WORK ☐ Takedown training lands people. Breakfall competence (both training partners) is a prerequisite for every live stage in this book, and neck safety rules every front headlock and cradle position: pressure is applied to position, never cranked, and any neck complaint ends the exchange instantly. ☐ Sprawl drilling teaches defenders to put hips on shoulders, not on necks. A sprawl that lands on a training partner's head or neck is a foul in this book, at any stage. ☐ The tap is law, and in takedown chains the verbal tap is drilled as loudly as the physical one — hands are often busy holding legs. ☐ Live stages (Part 8, stages 5–8) run on proper mat surface with space per pair, and never as a fatigue finisher. Tired wrestlers fall badly. ☐ Knee and ankle reports after shot drilling are logged like any other injury data in this library. A penetration knee that complains weekly gets volume changes, not toughness speeches.
Part 1: The Base — Stance, Motion, and Distance Standards
| Element | The standard |
|---|---|
| Stance | Knees bent, hips back and down, back flat, head up, weight 50/50 until the setup declares otherwise |
| Motion | Short steps, feet never crossing, stance recoverable at every instant — a wrestler mid-step is a wrestler mid-fall if touched |
| Level change | Hips drop by bending knees, back stays flat, head stays up; the "bow" (chest folding) is a fault, not a level change |
| Penetration step | The lead foot steps between his feet (double) or to the outside of the target leg (single), deep enough that the trailing knee passes his front foot's line |
| Distance ruler | In a tie, your forearm's span is the measurement; shots from open space fire only off his step toward you |
| Head position | On the shot: head up, pressed to his ribs/chest side (double) or tight to the leg (single); a head hanging in the middle is a guillotine and front-headlock invitation |
