Mat Manual companion guide to "Right Against Left: Fighting Kenka-Yotsu." Print it. The article teaches the matchup. This book drills it on cards: the inside and outside positions, first-grip sequences for both directions of the matchup, lead-hand ladder drills, power-hand denial and recovery cards, throw kits re-fitted to the angled chest, kenka-yotsu randori formats with a scoring system for the grip fight itself, and a matchup log that shows which address your attacks were launched from.

BEFORE ANYTHING: THE AGREEMENTS ☐ Grip drills run at the agreed stage. A grip fight at full contest spite in a learning round teaches both players to grab desperately, which is the opposite of this book. ☐ Grip breaks end holding a grip, per the rules and the Kumi-Kata article. A break drilled into empty air is a fault, and the drill stops to fix it. ☐ Nobody's fingers are bent back, ever, in any drill, at any stage. It is a penalty in contests and an injury in training, and it ends the round and the partnership for the day. ☐ Left-handed players in the room are training partners in this book, not demonstration equipment. Kenka rounds are mutual work, and the addresses are taught to both players. ☐ Throat and face contact in hand fighting is a stop, a reset, and an apology, in that order.
Part 1: The Matchup Map
| Element | Ai-yotsu (same stance) | Kenka-yotsu (opposite stances) |
|---|---|---|
| Lead feet | Mirrored, apart | Close, contesting the same ground |
| The chests | Square to each other | Angled, lead shoulders near |
| Your strong lapel target | Open in front of you | Behind their lead arm |
| The lead hands | Each works its own side | Both fight for one small space |
| Your power hand and theirs | On opposite sides of the fight | On the same side, in direct competition |
| Throw geometry | Turns into a square chest | Turns across an angled chest |
| How often it happens | Half the room, roughly | The other half, and most contest draws |
How this book is used. Parts 2 to 8 build the grip game. Parts 9 to 14 re-fit the throwing game. Parts 15 to 17 run the matchup live under formats. A player new to kenka-yotsu work starts at Part 2 and does not skip to the live formats, because the formats score the positions, and positions you cannot take on purpose cannot be scored on purpose either.
