Mat Manual companion guide to "Sumi Gaeshi: The Corner Throw." Print it. The article teaches why the corner, the grip order, and the gate decide this throw. This book trains them: grip-entry cards with the over-the-back version first, lift-leg placement drills, direction-reading progressions fed at three postures, landing grades, and follow-through standards that build on the throw-to-ground work rather than repeating it.

BEFORE ANYTHING: THE UKEMI GATE IS PASS/FAIL ☐ Uke's falling for this throw is reliable before uke receives a full sumi gaeshi: the diagonal travel fall or roll your club teaches, chin tucked, no straight arm posted into the mat, shown at speed. Pass or fail. No percentage version. ☐ Tori's own drop, roll, and recovery falling are reliable before tori throws at full travel. ☐ The flight path to the corner is clear of other pairs, walls, and mat edges before every drop. The check is spoken in early drilling. ☐ Grip before drop, every rep. A hand reaching for the back after the sit has started ends the rep. ☐ Tired drops are collapses and uke pays for them. The dose caps in Part 17 are safety rules. ☐ A partner who has not passed the gate trains entries, grips, and fit-ins only. Nobody leaves the ground in their reps. ☐ Room, school, and event rules on sacrifice throws govern. Where they restrict the throw, the throw waits.

Part 1: The Technique Card
FieldDetail
NameSumi gaeshi
TranslationCorner throw
FamilySacrifice throw. Tori gives up standing on purpose and rolls uke to the corner
Primary versionOver-the-back grip, taken over uke's shoulder to the back of the jacket or belt area per club teaching
Contingency versionDouble-lapel grip, Part 4. Taught second, drilled less
Tori's job in one lineHold the bend with the grip, sit to the corner, hook and lift inside uke's thigh, and roll uke past your shoulder line
The liftShin and instep hook inside uke's thigh. A lift timed with hands and drop, never a kick
Uke's fallDiagonal travel fall or roll per club teaching, beyond tori's shoulder, on the corner line
Tori's end stateRolled with the throw, a grip kept, ready to follow on the ground or stand per club finish
The throw fails whenIt is aimed straight back, the grip is chased after the drop, or the lift fires as a kick
Gate summaryPart 2, pass/fail, coach signed

Safety printed on this card because it belongs on every card in this book: no full throw exists in these pages without the Part 2 gate, clear space, and a receiver whose falling has passed.
