Mat Manual companion guide to "How to Throw Tai Otoshi." Print it. The article teaches why the leg is a barrier and not a sweep. This book is the working reference: the full technique card, grip and stance cards with entry checklists, fit-in progressions that isolate barrier placement, front-corner kuzushi drills, the honest tai-otoshi and seoi-otoshi comparison lab, combination and counter drills, and a twelve-week plan with landing grades at every stage.
Player: ______________________________ Club: ______________________________ Coach: ______________________________ Stance: ☐ Right (migi) ☐ Left (hidari) Partner stance tonight: ☐ Ai-yotsu (matching) ☐ Kenka-yotsu (opposite)
SAFETY, BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE ☐ Ukemi (falling technique) before throws: uke receiving tai-otoshi must have a checked forward-rotating fall — chin tucked, slap wide, no straight posted arm — before the first full rep in this book. ☐ The barrier leg plants low, across the shin to ankle line. It never drives sideways into the knee, never hooks behind the knee, and is never placed on a partner who is tangled, turned away, or already falling. ☐ Tori keeps uke's sleeve through every landing, drilling speed included. An unguided rotation is a failed rep in this book, whatever it looked like. ☐ Never throw a partner who cannot fall safely today. Use fit-ins (Parts 5–6) and a crash mat until their falling can carry the throw. ☐ Mat awareness: tai-otoshi finishes travel forward from uke's position. Check the space in front of uke before every set. ☐ The stop word ends any set instantly, from any player, for any reason. Cause is logged in Part 20.
Part 1: The Technique Card
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| Name | Tai-otoshi |
| Translation | Body drop |
| Classification | Te-waza (hand technique) — 16 te-waza in the current Kodokan classification (2017 revision) |
| Gokyo placement | Dai Nikyo, the second set of the Gokyo no Waza (the Kodokan's standard syllabus) |
| Tori's job in one line | Load uke forward onto the front foot toward the front corner, turn and drop across their front, plant a low barrier, and rotate uke over it with the hands |
| The leg's job | Barrier only. Planted low and early. Never a sweep, hook, or kick |
| Uke's fall | Forward-rotating fall landing on back and side, chin tucked, slap wide, free arm never posted straight |
| The throw fails when | Uke can step over or around the barrier, which means kuzushi or placement failed first |
| Core grips | Classic sleeve and lapel; high lapel; same-side pictures in kenka-yotsu (Part 2) |
| Main counters | Step-over, turn-behind and hip block, ura-nage family answers to careless turns (Part 13) |
| Best combination partners | Osoto-gari and ouchi-gari when uke pulls back; a second tai-otoshi or foot sweep when uke steps over (Part 12) |
| Honest neighbor | Seoi-otoshi loads uke and drops under the load. Tai-otoshi does not load. Part 10 is the full separation |
