SAFETY — READ FIRST, EVERY CYCLE ☐ Ukemi (falling technique) comes before throws, always. No player in this book receives a full throw until their breakfalls have been checked at the speed and height the throw produces. ☐ Control the partner's fall to the end: hold the sleeve, guide the landing, land your own weight clear of your partner. ☐ Never throw a partner who cannot fall safely from that technique today: injury, fatigue, fear, and a bad night all count. ☐ Mat awareness is a skill in this book, not a hope: check the space behind your partner before every throw in crowded formats. ☐ Any player may stop any pairing at any time with no reason given. The stop is final for that round. ☐ Beginner lightweight with beginner heavyweight is never a free-randori pairing under this book. Drill formats only, until Part 7's gates are passed.
Part 1: The Gap Bands — Know Which Problem You Have
Measure the gap in kilos and in experience. Both numbers matter. A 30 kg gap between two experienced players is a technical problem. The same gap between two beginners is a supervision problem.
| Gap | Band name | Default format |
|---|---|---|
| 0–10 kg | Matched | Normal randori |
| 11–20 kg | Noticeable | Normal randori with Part 5 and Part 6 standards named before the round |
| 21–35 kg | Mismatch | This book in full: constrained formats first, free randori only through Part 7's gates |
| 36 kg and over | Major mismatch | Coach-paired only. Constrained formats and nage-komi (throwing practice). Free randori only for two experienced players who both request it |
Experience bands used throughout this book:
| Band | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Beginner | Under roughly a year, ukemi still being built, no reliable control under resistance |
| Developing | Ukemi sound, core throws controlled at practice speed, randori experience against own size |
| Experienced | Controls throws at full speed, falls from all major families, has coached or fed drills for others |
