SAFETY, BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE ☐ Tap early and tap often. Against a bigger partner, submissions arrive with more force behind them. Tap when the position is lost, not when the joint complains. ☐ When your partner taps, or says anything, release instantly. First the release, then the discussion. ☐ Never let your neck fold under a stack. Post, shoulder-walk, concede the pass, or tap. In that order, and fast. ☐ Agree the start with much bigger partners: pull guard, start seated, or start in a named position. No surprise landings. ☐ Say injuries and cranky joints out loud before the round, not after they get loaded. ☐ You may decline any round. "I am sitting this one out" needs no reason attached.
The Size Gap in One Table
Sort every partner by the gap, not by the belt. The same purple belt is three different rounds at three different gaps.
| Gap | What it feels like | What changes in your game | Round plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 10 kg (about 20 lb) | A normal hard round | Almost nothing. Your full game is available | Train as usual. This is your reference class |
| 10 to 20 kg (20 to 45 lb) | Pressure is heavier, grips are stronger, bridges move you further | Flat positions get expensive. Grip fights must be won early or abandoned | Full game with adjustments from the annex below. Frames earlier, distance guards first |
| Over 20 kg (45 lb plus) | A different sport in the bad positions | Holding still is not available. Locks that need a grip ripped loose are not available | Positional starts, flow agreements, back and neck attacks only. Decline uncontrolled new partners at this gap without a coach's setup |
