Mat Manual companion guide to "Catch as Catch Can: Where the Holds Came From." Print it. The article tells the story. This book prints it as a dated reference for the wall: Lancashire roots, the Wigan line, Burns and Gotch in America, the carnival decades marked as contested ground, the Japan line, and the revival, with the claim status marked on every entry.

BEFORE ANYTHING: HOW THIS BOOK MARKS ITS CLAIMS ☐ Every dated entry in this book carries one of three labels. Documented means a dated record, contemporary reporting, or an institutional history supports it. Reported means memoirs, oral histories, or later accounts agree on it, but no surviving record settles it. Tradition means the story is told and retold inside the art and cannot be verified as an event. ☐ The labels are part of the entry. If you copy, teach, or post an entry from this book, the label travels with it. Stripping a label to make a story sound stronger is the one misuse this book forbids. ☐ The carnival decades are contested ground throughout. Entries from that era default to reported or tradition unless a specific record is named. ☐ Where this book says the record is thin, that is the finding. Do not fill a thin place with a confident date, a score, or a streak from a website that gives no source. ☐ Corrections are welcome: if a dated source moves an entry from reported to documented, write it in the margin with the source named.

Part 1: The Reading Rules

Part 1: The Reading Rules
LabelWhat stands behind itHow to repeat it
DocumentedA date, a result, or a founding that contemporary records, press coverage, or the institutions involved supportState it as fact, with its date
ReportedMemoirs, interviews, oral history, or later reporting that agree in outlineState it as reported, and name the kind of source: "wrestlers' memoirs report that..."
TraditionA story the art tells about itself, with no record that settles itTell it as a story, enjoy it as a story, and never teach it as a result

The two traps. Laundering: a tradition repeated often enough starts to sound documented, because nobody prints the label anymore. And the reverse trap: throwing out a reported claim because it is not documented. Carnival wrestlers left few records because their work left few records. A reported claim told by several men who did not know each other is real evidence, of a different grade, and the label says which grade.

The working habit. For any new claim, ask: Who first wrote it down? When? What did they gain from the telling?
