Mat Manual companion guide to "The Wai Kru Is Not a Warm-Up Dance." Print it. The article teaches the meanings. This reference keeps them: a dated timeline with every entry marked as record or tradition, the ram muay sequence described in order for recognition at events, and the culture glossary a student needs to follow a Muay Thai night without guessing.
Name: ______________________________ Gym: ______________________________ Kru / instructor: ______________________________ Start date: ______________
BEFORE ANYTHING: HOW THIS REFERENCE IS READ ☐ Every historical entry in this book carries a mark: [Record] for what documents support, [Tradition] for what the art's own tellings carry, and [Variation] for what differs between camps, regions, and schools. An entry with no mark has been misprinted. Find the mark before you repeat the claim. ☐ The ram muay sequence in Parts 11 to 15 is description for recognition only. It is printed so a spectator can follow what a fighter is doing in the ring. It is not a practice instruction, not a script, and not a substitute for being taught the ritual by your own kru. ☐ No student performs a ram muay from this book. Students learn the wai kru from their own teacher, in their own gym, when that teacher decides. That rule is part of the culture this book describes. ☐ Sacred and camp objects named here, above all the mongkhon, are handled only as Part 17 and Part 22 direct. If you are unsure, do not touch. Asking costs nothing. ☐ Where this book and your kru differ, your kru's account governs your gym's practice. Note the difference in Part 27 rather than arguing it from a printed page.
Part 1: The Marking System
| Mark | Means | How to repeat it |
|---|---|---|
| [Record] | Supported by documents, dates, buildings, or institutional history a reader can check | State it as fact, with its date |
| [Tradition] | Carried by the art's own stories and teaching lineages; details are not settled by surviving documents | State it as the tradition tells it, and say so |
| [Variation] | True for some camps, regions, or eras and not others | Name whose version it is before calling it the version |
Worked example. "Rajadamnern Stadium opened in Bangkok in 1945" is [Record]. "Nai Khanom Tom won his freedom by defeating a series of Burmese opponents" is [Tradition]. "The three bows honor teacher, family, and the art" is the common form; a camp that names ancestors or its home province in the same bows is [Variation], not an error.
Sorting drill: take three claims you have heard in your gym this month and sort them before you read on. Claim sorted as record: ______________________________ Claim sorted as tradition: ______________________________ Claim sorted as variation: ______________________________ Re-sort them after Part 9 and note, honestly, which ones moved: ______________________________
