SAFETY, BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE — THIS BOOK'S WHOLE SUBJECT ☐ The toe hold is trained catch-and-release in this room until the coach signs a higher stage for the pair, in writing, in Part 22. Control shown, turn not applied, position released. ☐ Any tap, verbal call, sound that might be either, or sudden thrash ends the lock instantly and completely. Release first. Discussion is a separate, later event. ☐ Never crank. The finish, where stages allow it at all, is a slow turn of the body in small degrees. A yank, a jump, or a fall into the lock ends the student's leg lock privileges. ☐ Torque travels to the knee when the leg cannot rotate. Any knee pop, swelling, or pain ends that student's session and is logged in Part 24 the same day. ☐ A student who does not train this lock live says so once. It is respected permanently, without negotiation, teasing, or being used as a demonstration defender for finishes. ☐ Safety at every gate in this book is pass or fail. There is no partial credit on a safety line, and no stage is skipped for strength, seniority, or experience in another art.
Part 1: How This Book Is Ordered, and Why
Most technique books are ordered grip, finish, defense, safety notes. This book is ordered the way the lock is allowed to exist in a safe room, and the order is itself the main teaching.
| Order | Content | Parts |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Recognition: what the lock is, what it damages, the tap pictures | Parts 2, 3, 4 |
| 2 | Control: the positions the lock lives in, held without the grip | Parts 5, 6 |
| 3 | Defense: the layers, drilled before any student attacks | Parts 7 to 11 |
| 4 | The stages: the gate system that releases skills one at a time | Part 12 |
| 5 | The grip and the finish, inside the stages only | Parts 13, 14, 15 |
| 6 | The room: duties, mismatches, rules worksheet, incidents | Parts 16 to 20, 24 |
| 7 | Training life: sessions, rotation, assessment | Parts 21, 22, 23, 25, 26 |
A student reading this book out of order is not harmed by it. A coach teaching out of it out of order is. The stages in Part 12 refer back to the earlier parts by number, and no sign-off in this book can be earned from the finishing parts alone.
