Mat Manual companion guide to "Under the Knee: Surviving and Escaping Knee on Belly." Print it. The article teaches the posture and the two escapes. This card book installs them: the survival checklist, both escapes as step cards with checkpoints, a positional ladder that prices survival before escape, and the drill library that builds the timing to fire on the transition instead of after it.

SAFETY AND AGREEMENTS, BEFORE ANYTHING ☐ The knee is placed, never dropped, in every drill in this book. Partners set the position at the agreed pressure and add weight by agreement only. ☐ The bottom player's tap, or their word, ends any rep at once. Knee ride pressure on a trapped rib is a real submission risk for smaller and older students, and is treated as one. ☐ Any sharp rib pain, breathing difficulty after a round, or a click that was not there before stops positional work that day and is told to the coach. ☐ Escapes are drilled at the ladder stage the pair has earned (Part 11). Nobody's first knee ride is a live one.
Part 1: The Survival Posture Card
Tape this inside the cover. The posture is built in order, every rep, before any escape.
| Order | Element | Standard | ☐ |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Turn | A few degrees toward the knee, never flat, never away | ☐ |
| 2 | Near frame | Near elbow and forearm on their hip and thigh, elbow tight to ribs | ☐ |
| 3 | Far hand | Home, guarding the collar and their posting hand | ☐ |
| 4 | Elbows | Both inside the line of your body | ☐ |
| 5 | Feet | Planted, ready to bridge | ☐ |
| 6 | Breath | Small sips through the nose; no held breath | ☐ |
The posture test. A coach can look at a frozen pair and check all six rows in five seconds. If any row fails, the rep is a posture rep, not an escape rep, and the ladder stage does not advance.
