Mat Manual companion guide to "He Always Hits First: The Three Timings of Kumite." Print it. This book drills the three timings separately before it mixes them: drill cards for go no sen, sen no sen, and sen sen no sen, a cue-reading progression from obvious launches to fine ones, variable-timing partner drills where the attacker randomizes every launch so reads cannot be memorized, a reaction-window tracker for your block-to-counter gap, and review sheets that classify every exchange in your filmed rounds by the timing you actually used.

BEFORE ANYTHING: THE AGREEMENTS ☐ Timing drills run at the contact level your club sets for the drill, in protectors, and the timing never licenses more contact than the drill names. ☐ The attacker's job is honest attacks at the announced level. Feints enter only in the parts that call for them. ☐ A read is not a guess: in every reading drill, the defender names the cue after the exchange. Unnamed successes are logged as guesses. ☐ Sen sen no sen work (Parts 11 to 13) is for students whose instructor has cleared them for free-format timing work. The earlier timings are complete training without it.
Part 1: The Three Timings — Reference Card
| Timing | The strike lands | The information you act on | The risk it carries |
|---|---|---|---|
| Go no sen | After their technique, inside its recovery | The whole attack: weapon, line, target | The counter arrives after the window and meets a re-formed guard |
| Sen no sen | As their technique launches | Launch cues: weight, shoulder, breath, knee | Feints manufacture cues; a wrong read eats the real attack |
| Sen sen no sen | Before the technique exists | Decision cues: settling, fixing eyes, breath change | Entering on nothing: collisions, warnings, counters |
