Mat Manual companion guide to "Kihon Is Not the Warm-Up." Print it. The article argues that basics are the main event, not the toll before it. This book turns that argument into sessions: templates by available time, standard cards for each technique family, self-assessment sheets you can grade without an instructor in the room, and a four-week rotation that pairs each kihon set with the kata chapter it feeds.

BEFORE ANYTHING: PRACTICE SAFETY AND AGREEMENTS ☐ Warm up before kihon practice in this book, every session. Kihon is not the warm-up, so it does not replace one. Joints, hips, and ankles are prepared before stance and kicking standards are demanded. ☐ Stop a set on pain that changes technique: knee, hip, ankle, wrist, or shoulder. Note it in the session log (Part 22) and tell the instructor at the next class. Training through a pain that is reshaping your stance builds the reshaped stance. ☐ Partner-fed work (Part 11) runs at agreed speed and agreed contact, stated out loud before the set. Either partner can lower speed or contact with one word, and the set obeys at once. ☐ Kicks in partner work land on pads, shields, or a held guard, not on a partner's body, unless the drill card says otherwise for your grade and dojo rules. Head-level work follows your dojo's head-contact rules, without exception. ☐ Practice space is checked before solo work: floor clear, room for a full stance and a full kick in every direction the set travels, no furniture edge inside the travel line. ☐ Volume builds across the four weeks in Part 12. A student in week 1 does not copy a week 4 session. Standards first, volume second, always in that order.
Part 1: The System at a Glance
One rule runs the whole book: name one standard before the set, grade only that standard during the set, log the result after it.
| Element | What it is | Where it lives |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | The single check for this set: stance, hip, recoil, breathing, chamber, or level | Named on every card |
| Dose | Sets and reps, fixed before the set starts | Printed on every card |
| Pass | The count that earns the next step, stated as reps at standard out of reps thrown | Printed on every card |
| Log | One honest line per session | Parts 22 and 23 |
| Family | Core techniques in this book | First standard to master |
|---|---|---|
| Punch | Oi zuki (lunge punch), gyaku zuki (reverse punch), kizami zuki (front-hand punch) | Hip turn finishing with the punch |
| Block | Age uke (rising block), uchi uke (inside block), soto uke (outside block), gedan barai (down block), shuto uke (knife-hand block) | Finishing position covering its line |
| Kick | Mae geri (front kick), mawashi geri (roundhouse kick), yoko geri (side kick) at school stage | Chamber before extension, recoil after it |
| Stance transition | Zenkutsu dachi (front stance), kokutsu dachi (back stance), kiba dachi (horse stance) travel and turns | Hip height held across the change |
