BEFORE ANYTHING: SAFETY AND PARTNER AGREEMENTS ☐ Hand wraps are on and gloves are the gym's sparring weight for every partner drill in this book. Bare-knuckle pad work is not a drill in this book at any stage. ☐ Power is agreed before the round and named out loud. A striker who throws above the agreement ends the round, and the coach is told. Pass/fail. ☐ Elbow work appears in this book only as a transition endpoint on pads, at pulled power, with a coach present. No elbow is thrown at a partner's head in drilling, held target or not, unless the gym's own advanced rules say so in writing. ☐ A partner who feels a wrist, shoulder, or hand complaint reports it the round it appears. Punching volume drops or the role changes; nobody boxes through a new hand pain to finish a plan. ☐ Head contact in sparring games follows the gym's standing agreements. These games score guard return and entries, not damage.
Part 1: The Tall Stance for Punching
Punches in this book leave from the Muay Thai stance and return to it. The stance is set before every card.
| Element | The standard |
|---|---|
| Height | Tall: knees soft, hips under the shoulders, no crouch at rest |
| Facing | Hips and chest facing the partner more fully than a boxer's bladed stance |
| Weight | Centred, per your gym's split; either leg can check or step without a rebuild |
| Feet | At marching length, the stance the footwork book owns; punches do not lengthen it |
| Guard | Hands at the cheeks, elbows in over the ribs, chin down behind the hands |
| Readiness test | Coach calls "check": either shin rises without the hands dropping or the stance changing |
The one adaptation that matters. Boxing craft is welcome in this book where it survives the stance. Hip turn, a straight return line, a tucked chin: kept. The deep crouch, the wide weave, the long bladed stance: left at the door, because knees, kicks, and checks live where those movements travel.
