Mat Manual companion guide to "Randori Is Not Shiai: Training at the Right Intensity." Print it. The article makes the argument. This book is the equipment: the intensity dial printed for the wall, pre-round goal cards, mid-round signal phrases, a response ladder for the partner welded at the top, a self-check worksheet, feedback scripts, a weekly intensity plan, partnership repair steps, and a new-member briefing card, so the agreements are taught as part of the art.

BEFORE ANYTHING: THE AGREEMENTS THIS BOOK OPERATES UNDER ☐ The setting is named before every round in this book's system: a word or a number, out loud. An unnamed round defaults to working pace, never to the hotter partner's preference. ☐ Either player may lower the setting mid-round with one sentence, no reason owed, no argument entertained. Raising the setting mid-round requires both players to agree, out loud. ☐ Being thrown cleanly is information, not a verdict, and it is never repaid. The revenge throw is a conduct matter in any club using this book. ☐ Seniors set the level for juniors. A hard round against a beginner is a senior's failure, whatever the beginner asked for. ☐ The coach is the dial's referee of last resort, and being sent to the coach about intensity is a normal event, not an escalation.

Part 1: The Intensity Dial — The Wall Table

Print this part large. It is the whole system on one page.

Part 1: The Intensity Dial — The Wall Table
SettingPercentDefencesAttacksFor
Light~30Guide and steer; no barricadesCompleted when genuinely thereNew techniques live, timing, returns from injury, mixed levels
Working~60Honest, without siegecraftReal, in volumeDefault development: most rounds, most growth
Hard~90Full honesty, near-contestFull commitmentMatched experienced partners, agreed, in short supply
Contest100Everything legal toward a resultEverything legal toward a resultShiai. In the club: almost never, and never unilaterally

The percent honesty note. Nobody's 60 is measured. The numbers are a shared vocabulary, not a gauge: what matters is that both players mean the same setting by the word, and Part 4 to 6's specifications are how the meanings are kept common across a room.
