Mat Manual companion guide to "Passing Fast: The Toreando and the Speed Game." Print it. The article teaches what speed does to a guard and where the speed game fails. This book builds it as training: safety first, grips and the redirect as gated mechanics, footwork ladders, the leg drag as a connection, a guard-by-guard answer table, decision cards for changing systems, positional rounds scored on the settle as well as the clear, and trackers that log every entry by guard, side, and failure cause.

BEFORE ANYTHING: SAFETY, SPEED, AND PARTNER RULES ☐ Tap rules run both directions and stop the rep instantly: hand, voice, or foot. A guard player caught by a fast entry, a leg drag, or a dropping settle taps, and the passer releases and resets with no debate. ☐ Speed is for steps, never for landings. No diving onto a partner, no dropping knees, chest, or body weight onto ribs, head, or neck. Every settle in this book is placed, at drill pace first, however fast the steps before it were. ☐ Neck and head safety: a passer whose head is trapped in a guillotine picture during drilling stops and resets. Nobody fights out of a set choke at speed to save a drill rep. ☐ Knee and ankle care: leg drags and redirects move a partner's legs by steering, never by twisting a trapped knee or wrenching an ankle. Any joint pain in either player ends the rep. ☐ Resistance is earned on the ladder in Part 19. A pairing that skips stages, or goes live before the settle standard is passed, returns to the stage below. That rule is pass/fail. ☐ A partner with a neck, back, knee, or ankle condition is told the entry in advance and receives the slower version. Speed work is agreed work.

Part 1: The Speed Game at a Glance

One short moment, taken well. Everything in this book serves that moment and the settle after it.

Part 1: The Speed Game at a Glance
ElementWhat it isWhat success looks like
GripsBoth of their legs controlled, pants at knees or ankles in gi, shins or knees in no-giNo free leg left to hook you
RedirectTheir legs steered to one side, feet pointing awayTheir hips must turn back before any defence starts
StepsShort, low, wide steps past their hip line, opposite the redirectYou arrive balanced, head over your hips
SettleNear knee and chest land beside their hip, one control keptSide control held three seconds, chest connected
Leg drag connectionOne leg caught crossed, their hips turned away, your settle on the back-side hipThe re-guard delayed by their own turned hips

System law: clear fast, settle like a pressure passer. A rep that clears and does not settle is scored as a failed rep in every round in this book.
