Mat Manual companion guide to "Butterfly Guard: The Guard That Sweeps or Stands." Print it. The article teaches butterfly as a posture with two hooks attached, a sweep that lifts and tips, and a stand-up that makes the guard's failure mode useful. This book installs that order: seat first, grips second, hooks loaded third, and only then sweeps, stand-ups, and recoveries, each with a dose and a pass standard.

BEFORE ANYTHING: SAFETY AND PARTNER AGREEMENTS ☐ Tap early and often applies here too. A butterfly picture that becomes a submission, a leg entanglement, or a neck position follows normal tap and release rules at once, with no finishing a rep first. ☐ Sweeps lift and tip a partner who can base and fall. No sweep in this book is thrown against a partner whose posting arm you have trapped unless that card says so, the dose is slow, and both partners know the fall is coming. ☐ Stand-ups end in wrestling range. Partners agree the exchange stops at the stand, a taught takedown, or a clean re-seat. No improvised throws out of a stand-up drill. ☐ Knees and ankles: hooks press and lift, they are never kicked off, wrenched sideways, or trapped and twisted. Any knee or ankle complaint ends the rep and is logged. ☐ Flattened work stays honest. The top partner in recovery drills applies weight at the named percentage only, and either partner can call a reset with one word, at any point, without owing a reason.
Part 1: How This Book Scores Butterfly
Counting finishes flatters students who sweep tired beginners. This book scores the order that makes sweeps happen.
| Event | Score |
|---|---|
| Seat held tall for 10 seconds against grip fighting | 1 per 10 s |
| Grip picture won and named before a sweep attempt | 1 |
| Partner's weight loaded onto the hooks, felt and called | 1 |
| Sweep completed and landed in settled top control | 3 |
| Stand-up completed to a balanced stance | 2 |
| Flattened recovery to a seated seat, closed guard, or half guard | 2 |
| Sweep attempted with no grip picture (fault) | Rep restarts, fault logged |
| Posture flattened without a frame in the first second (fault) | Rep restarts, fault logged |
