Mat Manual companion guide to "How to Shrimp: The Movement Every Escape Is Built On." Print it. The article teaches the mechanics. This book turns them into automatic, both-sides movement: movement safety first, the four-piece shrimp with checkpoints, the bridge family, the bridge-to-shrimp combination, the technical standup, an honestly scoped roll progression, solo circuits that need no partner, application modules that connect each movement to the escapes it powers, pressure testing, and trackers that log reps by side until the movement survives a real chest.

SAFETY, BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE — MOVEMENT RULES ☐ Neck protection governs all roll work: rolls travel across the shoulders, never over the top of the head, and roll progressions are coach-led in stages (Part 9). Any neck pain stops roll work for the day. ☐ Partner load is agreed before it is applied: pressure percentages are named out loud, and the bottom player can end any loaded rep by hand, voice, or foot signal, instantly honored. ☐ Tap rules apply inside movement testing too: a movement round that turns into a submission picture follows normal tap and release rules, immediately. ☐ Ukemi before speed: falling and rolling skills are built at drill pace before any movement is tested at live pace, with mats checked and space cleared. ☐ Joint care: bridges drive through the feet and hips, never by pushing the head into the mat as a lever. Head stays light in every drill in this book.
Part 1: Movement Scoring — How This Book Measures Foundations
Speed impresses. Clean pieces under load tell the truth. Every test in this book scores the pieces, in order.
| Event | Score |
|---|---|
| Shrimp with all four pieces correct (Part 2 check) | 1 |
| Shrimp chained ×3 without a drag or a head throw | 2 |
| Bridge-to-shrimp completed with space visibly created | 2 |
| Technical standup clean, facing partner, balanced at the top | 2 |
| Movement survives partner load at the Part 10 stage being tested | Stage score logged |
| Escape completed in application rounds using the named movement | 3, and the movement is credited in the log |
| Dragged hip, thrown head, or crossed-feet standup in a test | Rep scored 0; fault logged (Part 14) |
